How Weddings Have Evolved Over 25 Years

By Fill The Floor Discos – Wedding DJs in Hertfordshire & Buckinghamshire

Having been married for 15 years, my wife often says that if we planned our wedding today, it would be completely different, and she’s probably right. Over the past 25 years, weddings have changed dramatically. Couples now have more freedom, creativity, and personal touches than ever before.

As a wedding DJ for 25 years, I’ve seen these changes up close. From music and décor to lighting and technology, modern weddings are more interactive, personal, and memorable than the early 2000s.

From Traditional to Personal

Weddings used to follow a set format: ceremony, formal meal, then a DJ or band in the evening. Today, couples want a day that reflects their personality. Venues now include rustic barns, outdoor marquees, and historic country houses, offering unique backdrops for a truly personal celebration. Every detail from lighting and décor to the playlist can be tailored to the couple, making the day authentic and relaxed.

Technology Brings Weddings to Life

Technology has transformed modern weddings. Photo booths, light-up letters, and LED starlit dance floors add interactive elements and create unforgettable memories for guests.

Music That Makes the Moment

When I started DJing, wedding playlists were packed with classic floor-fillers. While these are still popular, couples today mix genres, eras, and personal favourites to create a soundtrack that tells their story.

Modern Weddings Are Fully Personalised

Couples now have endless ways to personalise their wedding. From bespoke playlists and photo booth experiences to creative lighting and themed décor, every detail can reflect their style. Modern weddings balance timeless traditions with new technology, creating celebrations that are unique, memorable, and truly theirs.

Top Wedding Trends Hertfordshire Couples Are Booking Right Now

The biggest Wedding Trends Hertfordshire venues are seeing right now is curated, mixed-genre playlists rather than rigid disco-era setlists. Couples are far more involved in shaping the soundtrack — sharing Spotify playlists weeks ahead and asking for specific moments tied to specific tracks. Lighting is another area where Wedding Trends Hertfordshire has shifted hard: venue uplighting in the room colour, dance-floor wash, and mood-driven mid-evening lighting changes that match the music shift.

Another standout in Wedding Trends Hertfordshire: photo booths and 4ft light-up letters. They double as decor and entertainment, and guests treat them as a guaranteed photo opportunity. Wedding Trends Hertfordshire couples increasingly want extras like this baked into the booking.

Finally, Wedding Trends Hertfordshire shows a clear move toward longer evening receptions, later finishes, and live elements like sax-with-DJ or percussion-with-DJ blends. Couples want their wedding to feel different to anything their guests have been to before — and a thoughtful Wedding Trends Hertfordshire-aware DJ is the easiest way to make that happen on a sensible budget.
