21st Birthday Party Ideas: Venues, Music and Must-Haves for a Mixed Crowd
1. Find a room big enough for everyone
A 21st guest list is often bigger than people expect once uni, school and family are all invited. Sports clubs and community centres are the classic choice, and they are where a lot of the 21sts we play happen: Gerrards Cross Community Association, Nettleden Farm near Hemel Hempstead, and just over the border in west London Bedfont Sports Club, Feltham Rugby Club at Hanworth Park, Brook House FC in Hayes, West Drayton Community Centre and the function room at Goals Heathrow.
When you look round, check the finish time, where the DJ would set up and whether there is a clear space for a dance floor. We bring all the sound, lighting and cabling, so all we need from the venue is a standard socket.
2. Or bring the party home
A 21st at home can work brilliantly. For a 21st in Croxley Green we brought the light-up 21 and sixteen mood lights to turn the house into a party venue, and for a 21st in Watford the light-up 21 did the job on its own. If you are hosting at home, the numbers and a few mood lights make the biggest difference for the least space.
3. Put a giant 21 in the room
Our 4ft light-up numbers are colour-changing, so the 21 can match the outfit, the balloons or the theme. It is where every group photo gets taken. A light-up 21 is £100, with delivery, setup and collection free when it comes with our disco, or £25 on its own. Earlier this month the light-up 21 was the only thing booked from us for a 21st at Gerrards Cross Community Association, so the numbers work with any DJ or none at all.
4. A playlist for three generations
A 21st playlist has real range: the childhood pop and film soundtracks the whole year group knows every word to, the anthems from sixth form and uni, and whatever’s big right now. Share our request link before the party so friends can add songs in advance, and the set builds itself from songs that mean something to the room. Because the family is there too, we weave in the crowd-pleasers between the newer tracks, so the grandparents get a dance and nobody spends the night waiting for their bit.
You can read more about how we run the night on our 21st birthday DJ hire page.
5. Choose the look
Our disco comes in two finishes with the same sound and lighting: the sleek black setup or the elegant white setup. The 21sts at Feltham Rugby Club and Brook House FC both went for white. Uplighting comes with every disco, so the room can be washed in the birthday person’s favourite colour.
6. Something to do off the dance floor
With a mixed crowd, a photo booth gives everyone something to do together, from the uni friends to the grandparents. Guests can visit as many times as they like, with prints to take home and the full digital gallery the next day. Both of our booths are £350 for 3 hours, and our guide to the Magic Mirror vs the Selfie Pod explains which one suits which room.
7. Plan the speeches and the cake
Many 21sts have a big moment part-way through the night: a speech from a parent, a slideshow, the cake. Use the planning form in our booking portal to tell us the timings, and we will make the announcements and have the right song ready, then get everyone straight back onto the dance floor.
