Day in the Life of a Wedding DJ

Day in the Life of a Wedding DJ — what does a typical wedding-DJ day actually look like? After 25 years of wedding-DJ work, here is a real Day in the Life of a Wedding DJ at a Buckinghamshire wedding.

Morning of a Day in the Life of a Wedding DJ

A Day in the Life of a Wedding DJ starts long before the reception. We pre-pack the rig the night before, do a final equipment check, and review the playlist brief. A Day in the Life of a Wedding DJ also includes a morning call with the venue events team to confirm load-in time and setup space.

Mid-morning on a Day in the Life of a Wedding DJ we hit the road. Most weddings need a 3-hour setup window before guests arrive. A Day in the Life of a Wedding DJ involves load-in, PA placement, lighting rigging, sound check, and the final timeline review with the wedding coordinator.

Evening of a Day in the Life of a Wedding DJ

The evening of a Day in the Life of a Wedding DJ is where the real work happens. Reading the room, mixing the right tracks at the right time, managing the first-dance moment, and pacing the energy across 4-5 hours of dancing. A Day in the Life of a Wedding DJ ends with pack-down, load-out, and the drive home around 1am.

Day in the Life of a Wedding DJ — reception with Fill The Floor Discos lighting

By Fill The Floor Discos – Wedding DJs in Buckinghamshire & Hertfordshire

Ever wondered what it’s really like to be a wedding DJ? It’s not just pressing play…it’s reading the room, keeping the dance floor busy, and making sure every moment feels magical. Let’s follow a typical day with Fill The Floor Discos…

Morning: Preparation Is Everything

The day starts with a much-needed coffee and a final run-through of the couple’s playlist. We double-check the first dance and any other special dances, prepare any personalised videos, and set up Photo Booth templates and welcome screens if a booth is booked. We also make sure all up lighting is fully charged and ready to go, so every corner of the venue will look perfect once the party starts.

Early Afternoon: Load the Van

It’s time to load the van and get everything. Sound systems, lights, up lighting, 4ft LOVE or MR & MRS letters and the Magic Mirror Photo Booth (if booked) all go in. We double-check we have everything including backup gear, and any personalised props. With the van loaded and music playlists ready to go, we’re off to the venue to transform the space into a party ready celebration.

Late Afternoon: Setting the Stage

Arriving at the venue and introduce ourselves to the manager.  Unload the van and set up the sound system, lights, and any other service booked.

Top tip: Lighting makes a massive difference. A little mood lighting can transform the whole room before the party even starts.

Evening: The Main Event

Cue the big moment: Introduce the couple onto the floor for their first dance. It’s a magical moment, everyone’s watching, some tear up, others try to sneak a cheeky photo with their phones.

Late Night: Party Mode: ON

First dance done, lights go down, and we hit play on the first real party track. The floor fills up instantly, teenagers showing off TikTok moves, grandparents breaking out the conga line, and of course Uncle Dave demanding his boy band track.

Behind the Scenes: Reading the crowd is everything. The DJ isn’t just playing tracks—they’re guiding the energy of the room.

End of the Night – Last Dance & Goodbye

The night winds down, but the energy stays high for the last dance. Everyone joins the couple on the floor, singing and swaying together. As the final track ends, we watch the couple hug, laugh, and thank us. That’s the moment that reminds us why we love this job: being part of memories that last a lifetime.

When everyone has gone home: Pack Down

We pack down our gear, drive home and unload the van, another wedding done.
