Prom Light Up Letters: 4ft Numbers and Letters That Make the Night

Every prom we do now ends the same way: a queue of students waiting to be photographed in front of 4ft light-up letters. Prom light up letters have gone from a nice extra to the centrepiece of the night’s photos, the frame every group shot ends up in on Instagram — and ours have lit up school proms all over Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire.

I’m Daniel from Fill The Floor Discos. Here’s what the letters actually are, the combinations schools go for, and how to book them — on their own or alongside the disco.

What prom light up letters actually are

Each letter and number is 4ft tall, freestanding and battery-powered, so there are no cables trailing across a school hall and no hunt for plug sockets — beyond placing them, there’s no setup at all. The bulbs are warm white as standard, with vibrant colours or a mix of the two if that suits your theme better. They work anywhere we’ve been asked to put them: school halls, hotel ballrooms and marquees.

PROM, CLASS OF, or the year itself

PROM is the classic — instantly recognisable from the door. The other favourites are CLASS OF paired with year numbers, or the year on its own, and one school wanted their year squeezed in tight, so we built PROM24. If you can spell it, we can probably light it — the full range is on our numbers and letters page.

Where they go on the night

Nine times out of ten, near the entrance. Every guest gets their photo on the way in while the outfits are still immaculate, and the photo queue stays away from the dance floor later on. Schools consistently tell us the letters end up the most-photographed thing at the prom — ahead of the disco lights, the photo booth, sometimes even the food.

Not just proms

The same letters work for Year 6 leavers’ parties, sports presentation evenings, year-group celebrations and end-of-term staff parties. The warm-white LED finish photographs well under any lighting — it looks as good in a phone snap as it does in the official photographer’s shots.

Booking — on their own or with the disco

You can hire prom light up letters on their own, or as part of a prom package with the disco and photo booth — one supplier, one setup, one invoice. Either way, delivery, set-up and collection are included in the price, and we’ve been delivering to schools across Bucks and Herts for over a decade. If you’re planning the whole night rather than just the letters, our school prom DJ hire page covers how the full package works, and our disco hire page has the detail on the music side.

One honest tip: book early. Prom suppliers get secured from the September before, and the popular June and July dates go first. For the wider planning side, Netmums’ planning guides have useful checklists.

Questions schools ask about prom light up letters

Do they need a power socket?

No — every character is battery-powered, so they can stand wherever the photo works best rather than wherever the nearest socket happens to be. There’s no cable run for anyone to trip over, which matters in a hall full of students in long dresses.

Is there anything for staff to do?

Nothing. We deliver, place and collect, and placement takes minutes — the letters are freestanding, so there’s no rigging or fixing to walls. Staff on the night don’t need to touch them at all.

Can we book the letters without the disco?

Yes. Stand-alone hire is completely fine — plenty of schools book just the letters to go with entertainment they’ve already arranged. If you’d like everything from one supplier, that’s what the prom package is for.
